Questions

Which format should I use? JPEG for photographs, where its compression is very effective and the loss is hard to see. PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with transparency or sharp edges. WebP for the web, where it beats both at the same quality — though a few older tools still cannot open it.

What happens to transparency? JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white. PNG and WebP both keep it.

Does converting JPEG to PNG restore quality? No. Detail discarded by the original JPEG is gone; the PNG just stores the result losslessly from then on, in a larger file.
